Finally, a tablet that's suitable for the workplace!

It has been quite a while since I have come across a piece of hardware that has actually gotten me excited! I just have to share with you how great the Acer Iconia W500 tablet is!

I have used iPads, Android tablets and some clunky convertible Windows tablets over the years.  The iPad novelty wore off really fast when it was just a pain in the backside to integrate with my business applications and the way I need to work remotely.  The Android tablets just gave me a sad experience after iOS, and the Windows convertible tablets were just too big and heavy, with rubbish battery life.

Just a week ago an Acer W511 (this is the tablet with integrated 3G) landed in the office, right about the time I was thinking I needed to work a whole lot smarter; after all I work for a technology company!

So I pilfered this device, took it home over the weekend to run it up, and see what it could do.  I logged in with my Microsoft Account at set up, and low and behold this thing presented me with the same desktop I have on my Acer S7 laptop (a touchscreen Ultrabook).

I was pretty stoked that Microsoft had this part right.  Next was the actual hardware.  I started playing around, with my main goal being able to use Microsoft OneNote when I am out on the road and take hand written notes; really it was time to stop using paper.  This would allow me to get my notes back to the office instantly and begin the follow up processes a whole lot faster.

The speed of this device, with an Intel Atom processor has amazed me so far, no complaints at all.  The hand writing recognition is superb – although this is not a digitizer, I don’t seem to have any issues with getting my chicken scratch documented.

The bonus is, when I log into our Citrix Portal to begin some serious office work, I just dock my keyboard and am working like a pro, no stumbling around the mostly awkward on-screen keyboard!

I knew this product had been around for a while, but hadn’t really done anything with it.  Now someone is going to need a crowbar to prise this from my fingers!
